Some of the world’s most talented photographers have turned their lenses to the beauty of East Timor and its people. We are fortunate to be able to share their work with you.
Dan Groshong
A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Daniel Groshong earned his B.A. in Fine Arts, and began his professional career as a photographer for the environmental group Greenpeace. Groshong is a veteran photo-journalist of seven armed conflicts around the world from Somalia to Afghanistan and has been a professional photographer for 25 years. Groshong now specialises in travel and environmental photography and is the author of Timor-Leste Land of Discovery, the first coffee table book ever published depicting East Timor’s landscape, underwater and cultural wonders, with text written by Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton, Xanana Gusmao and José Ramos-Horta. Groshong is also the founder of the environmental organisation called The Hummingfish Foundation (www.hummingfishfoundation.org), which is dedicated to using photography and publishing to support community-based ecotourism assets around the world.

Nick Hobgood
In 2001 Nick was assigned to East Timor where he worked for 6 years implementing USAID programs which provided critical assistance to civil society organisations and government agencies during the post independence transition period. It was during this time that Nick was re-acquainted with his old passion, diving. Wanting to share the reef’s beauty with his infant daughter and wife, Nick started taking photographs and from then on was rarely seen in the water without his camera. The images on the East Timor Now site come from a collection of over 400 images that Nick has donated to Wikimedia with the intention of increasing the public’s awareness about marine conservation and the need to protect coral reefs.
